Is it Time to Start Your Tomatoes?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The first thing you need to do is figure out your frost date.

You can Google or follow this link to figure out what the last frost date is in your area.

If you are going to start your tomatoes outdoors, add two weeks onto your frost date.  Now you can count back 6-8 weeks to figure out when you can start your tomato seeds indoors.  If you have an Upside Down Tomato Kit, you need to pay particular attention to this so your tomatoes will be ripe and ready at the earliest moment of the season.

For example, I live in Northwest Florida.  I have a 50% chance of a spring frost on March 9th.  So, add 2 weeks… and I get March 23rd.  Subtract 6 weeks and I get February 9th.  Obviously this day has passed for me, but I started my tomato kit a few weeks ago so I should be good to go!

If you live in colder climate, say for example, Minneapolis, your last frost is around April 30th (but could go as late as May 16th).  For fun, we’ll use the April 30th date.  Add two weeks and you get May 14th.  Subtract 6-8 weeks and you can start your tomatoes indoors anytime between March 19th – April 2nd.  Which is… right now!

So go ahead and figure out your dates to make sure you are getting the MOST out of your gardening this year!

Starting my own Upside Down Tomato Kit

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I’ve received a lot of comments regarding the Upside Down Tomato Kit and the fact that the soil does not come as far as you’d hoped.  I ordered one of my own and got it started.  While yes, the soil didn’t come to the very tip top of the container, I still was able to plant my seeds and they are already sprouting beautifully!  Once your sprouts have established themselves, you can flip the container over and that soil problem will be gone.

However, if you are very unhappy with your purchase, Buzzy has no problem sending you some more soil pellets.  We want you to enjoy your product and get some yummy tomatoes!

Aside of all of this, you should be seeing sprouts!  Does anyone have a photo of their Upside Down Tomato kit in action?  I will send you a free packet of herb seeds if you will provide some photos.  We love to see how people are enjoying our products!

More People Than Ever Are Enjoying Gardening

IT’S TIME TO JUMP START YOUR GARDEN INDOORS

TYRONE, GEORGIA –(Marketwire – Feb. 01, 2010) -

It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time to get an early start on your spring gardening. As a result of the economy, gardening experienced a 19% increase last year as many made a cost conscious decision to grow their own produce. It seems like everyone is looking forward to some type of gardening in 2010.

As the top supplier of complete seed grow kits for consumers, Buzzy, Inc. CEO Kees Wurth says, “It is easy to be successful at growing. There are so many advantages to starting your seedlings or growing indoors, plus it is a fun activity that can involve the whole family.”

Here are Buzzy, Inc.’s top tips for starting seedlings indoors:

1. Practice Year Round Indoor Gardening. Many seed grow kits are designed to grow indoors all year long. Take advantage of enjoying these in your home. Herbs are especially easy to grow and can be used on a daily basis. All you need is a sunny window and to follow the easy step-by-step instructions that accompany the grow kit.

2. Save Money. Buying complete starter grow kits are much more cost effective than buying just seeds or seedlings. Most grow kits come with a container, seeds, top-quality soil and growing instructions at a very low price. If you were to purchase these items individually, it would cost a lot more.

3. Protect your Seeds from Outdoors Climate Changes. Starting your seeds indoors ensures optimal controlled conditions for germinating seeds. You will not have to worry about late frosts or rainy weather.

4. Enjoy an Early Harvest. Seeds started early indoors become healthy young plants with a 4 – 6 week start over seeds planted outdoors. Your first harvest will be enjoyed much earlier.

5. Benefit from Longer Growth Season. If you live in an area with a short growing season, starting seeds early indoors allows seedlings to thrive and mature when it is time to replant outdoors. Plus you can try new varieties that take a longer growth period.

6. Peace of Mind. If you grow your own herbs, vegetables or fruits from seeds, you are in control and know that you are enjoying fresher quality, better tasting produce.

Fresh herbs can be grown indoors year-round.

Sign Up for Buzzy Garden Club

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

If you hurry and sign up for the Buzzy Garden Club, then you will be able to take part in a survey that will help us with our new products.  That’s not all… there will be a free offer when you take the survey! (Free seeds, anyone?)  Not sure what the offer is going to be yet, but it will be worth it.  It’ll be a short survey, and to be honest, I like taking these kinds of surveys.  They’re quick and they ask your opinion on a whole range of things.  I like the fact that somebody is going to read my answer and think of it as valuable information.  That’s pretty cool.

So next time I post a new product on here, it could very well be that you had something to do with the creation!  So don’t forget to sign up right away by clicking here

It’s here! The Buzzy Upside Down Tomato Garden!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

I’m very excited to share the arrival of the Buzzy Upside Down Tomato Garden!  I had the privilege of working on this product from the very beginning.  I can tell you that I had great success last year growing tomatoes out of this kit and they were DELICIOUS!

The great thing about our Upside Down Tomato kit is that, unlike other similar products, ours comes with seeds.  You don’t have to wait until spring to go buy tomato plants at the store (secret additional cost they don’t like to mention).  Our kit comes with seed, soil and step-by-step instructions to make it as simple as possible.  To top it off, you can start your tomato seeds in the bucket indoors before moving to hang outdoors.  You can start your plants earlier in the year, getting a head start on spring planting.  The kit is all inclusive, making this the most economical way to grow tomatoes.

The success of this kit also relies on the variety of seeds.  As I said before, other upside down kits tell you to simply place a grown tomato plant (purchased) into the slots.  Has anyone tried this?  If you’re like some people I know, you simply went and bought a plant.  Little did you know that most varieties get way too heavy for a container that hangs upside down, therefore, making the whole experience a waste.  We provide a delicious variety of tomato seeds that are absolutely perfect for this type of growing.

Now on to the important information — where to buy!  Right now, these kits are available at Fred’s, Meijer and Cohen.  I will be sure to update everyone when it becomes available in more locations and online!

Baby it’s Cold Outside

Monday, January 11th, 2010

If you’re like me, you are sick and tired of this cold weather.  My plants are suffering and I haven’t felt like going outside for a week!  The sad part is that I live in Florida, where this kind of weather is rare and usually doesn’t last this long.  I’m sure there are plenty of people in Minneapolis saying, “What is she complaining about?” Some of us just aren’t made for this kind of cold, and I’m one of them.   My plants are also quietly complaining.

So, what’s the best solution for me?  Do I cut all my plants back?  Try to bring them all inside?  The truth is that this is the end for them.  But this is NOT the end for my Buzzy plants.  Most of my Buzzy Seeds Grow Kits are already indoors, on my windowsill in my kitchen.  I like to keep fresh herbs year round, and these kits make it easy as pie.  I’m excited about the new kits we will have available for next Fall and Winter.  If you’re like me, you hate to watch the winter cold kill everything green.  It’s amazing that we can continue to grow indoors year round.  To have the smell of fresh rosemary and lavender in January… now that’ll keep you indoors during the cold winter months!
